This video takes a look at how to repair aluminium guttering to a good standard that should last many years. Often aluminum guttering will start to leak from a joint, corner, or stop end after about 10 years. Especially if holding standing water.

Thumbing more mastic over the stop of the original built up sealant can fail early, as can a simple paint on solution. This aluminum gutter repair has worked well for me over the years, and one tube of gutter sealant and a roll of scrim will repair many, many gutter leaks.

If your are in the UK all the product links and other guttering repairs can be found on my website here :

For those in the USA or elsewhere try a good quality gutter sealant like this one : (affiliate)

Hope this helps.

As an alternative to spit, I use a small plastic container with 1:4 washup liquid and water. This will help you smooth out the mixture but not stick to your fingers.

Thanks for the advice. Aluminium gutters do have this weak spot, but my corner joints have lasted over ten years; now some need new sealant. I had no idea how to get this done as the installer was out of business! Luckily, saw your video and have completed two repairs. Good job!

If you use a heat gun in the corners it makes getting the old sealant out very very easy

There are so many gutter sealants out there. Which product do you recommend? I just installed new gutters and pick-up the sealant placed right next to the new gutters at Lowes. This sealant does not work at all. It's leaking from every connection and joints.

Is the glue actually called "gutter sealant?"

I'm fitting new painted/galv/steel guttering that matches my cladding. Should I paint the inside with say a bitumastic paint? I do not want to bother with it again for 30+ years.
