When I was a volunteer I refused to wear anything less!

I remember several years back there were plans to replace the helmets worn by the FDNY with the thermoplastic helmets. There was a huge uproar over that. The firefighters were outraged, claiming their leather helmets carried the scars of all the fires they had fought and they considered them to be their badges of courage and honor. I had to support them on that. As far as I know the plan to change never went anywhere.

Who else thought they were using the torch to test the helmet?

Tradition is a big thing here in the UK unfortunately if our fire helmets went with tradition, we'd be wearing a big piece of brass 😂, most fire services now use the Rosenbauer Heros Titan, but some others use the Gallet F1 and the XF

Who would of thought a luggage maker would create an iconic symbol of heroism

They have that amazing traditional "American" look, but it looks like a tremendous amount of work and cost compared to what plastic injection molding can do in a few seconds, modern plastics can withstand extreme temperatures (extreme compared to human skin at least). In France I've always seen the firefighters with shiny Gallet F1 helmets, so they look traditional to me.

Just bought my first New Yorker in June after being in the department for 5 years. It's way better than my plastic one and more comfortable too. I wish they were standard issue.

They need to keep this type of helmet, the "new" helmets that are coming out look stupid and are to bulky like a motorcycle helmet.

Nothing like the feel of a good broke in leather! Guys ask me on the fire scene all the time what the difference is in my leather and a standard cairns…..I just hand them the helmet and then they realize. Thanks Cairns for good reliable helmets, they also look top notch!

Would a knowledgeable person help me understand why a firefighter would prefer this type of leather helmet over one of the ones that look more like derivatives of full face modern motorcycle helmets?

The craftsmanship of these helmets decreased a bit when Cairns was sold to MSA in 2000. The stitching used to be tighter, the paint didn't chip, and the seams were all very neatly cut. I bought a brand new one in 2007 and it looks like the new guy made it. The seams are all jagged and the paint is chipping all over the place. I ended up buying a used one from 1996 on ebay a few years later and it looks so much better. These helmets aren't worth what they're charging for them these days (almost $600 for the base model!) but even with all their faults, I won't stray from Cairns leather. I just won't buy a new one. Give me leather or give me death!

I've still got a black leather New Yorker that me and a few other guys bought after Sept. 11th. to replace the Bullard helmet my department issued us. Just ordered another New Yorker in Natural after our department finally switched to leather helmets and I fell in love with the way the helmet looks without any type of coloring on it.
Absolutely love Cairns Leather lids!

I wore a Cairns leather helmet for 21 years as a NYC Fireman during the "War Years". That helmet protected me through many fires, including a fire where I was seriously burned on my face, neck and ears. The paint was burned right off my helmet and a Garrity disposable flashlight I had on my halmet was burned right down to the battery ( and incredibly still worked afterwards ! ).
I still have my helmet today although retired.
I say "Well Done Cairns" , your helmets protected generations of NYC Firemen and nothing today is better than that leather helmet.
Thank You !

paul conway leather's are not real leathers. its a composite helmet, (lighter and thinner version of their composite helmet) and WRAP it in a leather covering. You can't change the shape of it and its not hand made like a cairns.
